Maximizing Stretching for Kids: Tips and Tools
Stretching is an essential part of staying active and healthy for kids. It's why you'll see our classes at TGC stretch at the end of every session. It improves flexibility, reduces the risk of injury, and helps with muscle recovery after sports or play. For children involved in tumbling or gymnastics, incorporating stretching into their routine can also build lifelong habits for wellness and any activities they choose to be take on through the years. Here are some tips and tools to make stretching effective and fun for both you and your athlete!
Tips for Better Stretching
Warm Up First: Before stretching, warm up muscles with light activity like jogging in place, jumping jacks, or dancing for 5-10 minutes. Warm muscles stretch more effectively and reduce the risk of strains.
Hold Stretches Steady: Encourage kids to hold each stretch for at least 15-30 seconds without bouncing. This helps improve flexibility and prevents injuries. Not sure how to make this fun? Look up tabata songs for kids! These songs will coach you through push and rest phases! Some of Coach Katie's favorites are Tabata for Kids on Spotify that include fun songs like Shake it Off and How Far I'll Go!
Focus on Key Muscle Groups: Include stretches for major muscle groups, such as:
Legs:Â Hamstrings, quads, and calves
Arms:Â Biceps and triceps
Core and Back:Â Lower back and hip flexors
Breathe Deeply: Teach kids to pair deep, calm breaths with their stretches. This relaxes the body and enhances the stretch.
Stay Consistent: Make stretching a daily habit, especially before and after sports, tumbling, gymnastics, or other physical activities.
