The Power of Play: How Daytime Playtime Can Help in Building Physical Skills in Young Kids

Tullahoma Gymnastics & Cheer

Play is much more than fun—it’s a critical part of how children grow and thrive, especially when it comes to developing physical skills. At TGC, we’re excited to offer daytime playtime for kids 7 and under on Mondays and Fridays from 10 AM to 12 PM. For just $10 per child, your little ones can enjoy an active, engaging environment that supports their growth.

Why is play so important? Through activities like running, climbing, and exploring, children develop key motor skills such as balance, coordination, and strength. Play also improves flexibility and builds endurance—all while giving kids a chance to burn energy and express themselves. We've heard that some of the best naps happen after Daytime Playtime - for kids and parents! 😉

Daytime Playtime isn’t just about movement; it’s also about fostering confidence. When children conquer a new challenge—whether it’s balancing on a beam or climbing to the top of a structure—they learn perseverance and build self-esteem. Plus, group play encourages social skills, teamwork, and problem-solving, making it an all-around win for their development.

"But do I have to play with my child the whole time??" - The overstimulated, tired parent who needs to sit and zone out for a bit.

3 Ways Parents Can Encourage Independent Exploration and Play

Independent play is vital for children’s growth, helping them develop creativity, problem-solving skills, and confidence. Here are three ways parents can foster independent exploration during free play:

1. Offer a Safe, Open-Ended Environment

At Daytime Playtime, we have a safe, open space with soft mats, trampolines, and other age-appropriate equipment. A safe and inviting space gives them the freedom to focus on discovery rather than worrying about boundaries.

2. Offer Gentle Guidance, Then Step Back

Encourage your child by introducing new ideas or materials, but resist the urge to jump in or direct their play. For example, if they’re building a fort with mats, you might suggest or help to build one wall, then let them take the lead. Giving them space allows their imagination to flourish and group-think to happen.

3. Celebrate Efforts, Not Outcomes

Praise your child’s creativity and effort rather than focusing on what they achieve. There are no goals at Daytime Playtime other than to have fun! This helps them feel confident trying new things and encourages a growth mindset. Statements like, “I love how you tried stacking those mats differently,” show that the process is just as valuable as the result.

Daytime Playtime is a wonderful way for kids to develop a sense of autonomy and self-reliance in a safe and inviting space. With a little guidance and encouragement, parents can inspire their children to explore and grow through play! We can’t wait to see your little ones at TGC for playtime that’s as beneficial as it is fun. Come join us and watch them grow stronger, happier, and more confident through the power of play!
